Well, that's according to one observant person on a ferry in New Zealand. The ferry's captain then informed police that a passenger on board had been observed carrying "a suspicious article," which contained "small boxes with wires attached to them." The NZ police were quick to investigate and questioned this suspicious man. It happened to be that this terror suspect was a religious Jewish man from Israel who was putting on a 'teffilin' (pictured above). These are worn by orthodox Jewish men when praying to remind them that God brought the children of Israel out of slavery from Egypt. The man was released without charges.
This has been big news in Israel dumbfounded and bemused that someone mistook a tefillin for a bomb. However, this is definitely not the first time people in showing their religious devotion have been mistaken or targeted for terrorists. Just ask any male Sikh who wears a turban. For some people, essentially, you just have to be a little bit 'forren' and automatically they are thinking that you should be shipped off to Guantanamo.
Forum commenters on the Israeli Ha'aretz news website though were quick to comment about the matter - in that in the picture above (used on the wesbite) shows a man wearing the tefillin the wrong way. Everyone knows that the box should be worn on the inside of the arm. The nerve!
