Please, let this not be! Şemsettin Yıldız, an entrepreneur in the southeastern Turkish city of Gaziantep has announced the development of instant Turkish coffee. The new "Shazili" brand of instant Turkish coffee is set for release early next year. This could spell the end of many centuries of preparing the coffee using a special coffee pot called an 'ibrik' or 'jezve' over a flame (usually a camping gas cooker these days). Yıldız sees the expanded benefits of instant. “Because it does not require the regular cooking process, we believe our brand will be very much preferred at offices and on airplanes, by drivers, at coffee shops, while on the beach, or while camping and picnicking," he told Turkey's state-run Anatolian Agency. My big question is whether coffee readings will still be possible with this new instant version? Though he does assure us that there still will be foam (kaymak) on top. Small consolation.
Things have been on the slide for the aromatic coffee since one Turkish appliance manufacturer introduced a few years ago a machine that brews that stuff without any human intervention. Well, the proof is in the pudding...
